- Lack of field volunteers criticized Borough officials have long championed the level of volunteerism in this community but are now expressing frustration because when they needed help recently, no one showed up. Borough Councilman John Hegarty said he attended a meeting of the Recreation Commission to reach out to local sports groups, some of which have criticized the quality of some of the borough sports fields. One of the fields was damaged last year by the field hockey team from the Frank Antonides School, and this year, a soccer team from the same school complained about that damage. Hegarty said he was frustrated by that attitude. Hegarty said he wanted to open lines of communications with those organizations that use the fields so that at the end of each season, the borough and the organizations can work together to recondition the fields. Mayor Janet W. Tucci said as the mother of three sons ? now grown ? no one spent more time on the local fields than she did. She said she was always impressed by the level of volunteerism she witnessed in the sports programs and elsewhere in town. So she was disturbed after local officials dispatched the borough road department to the fields ? with the stipulation that volunteer workers also would participate in the work ? and found no one else showed up. Tucci said the borough should investigate whether to charge a fee to nonresidents and nonresident teams that use the local fields. But Hegarty said the borough lacks a mechanism to document users who live in town and those who live elsewhere. Hegarty said local sports representatives attending the recent Recreation Commission meeting said they were more than willing to help. They didn't show up because no one told them they were needed, he said.
- Subdivision approved for tract in Middletown The days of munching grass on a field on Chapel Hill may be numbered for some township cows.
