A cookie press, or cookie gun, is a hollow tube fixed at one end with an ornamental template and coupler to secure it in place, and a plunger at the other. Cookie dough is inserted in the tube and pushed through the template by pressing on the plunger, exerting force as the newly shaped dough drops on to a cookie sheet. Cookie presses come with a variety of decorative templates, shaping cookies from trees to stars, flowers and wreaths. One of the best known cookies pressed is a Spritz, a butter-based dough with different variations of flavorings.
Cookie presses are sold at different price levels depending on the type: manual, battery-operated or electric. They are made from stainless steel, aluminum, and plastic. Some models are composed of a combination of these materials. Whichever model you choose, they all create beautifully designed cookies with little effort. Most models are sold at stores which carry kitchen supplies, with a larger variety being offered during the holiday season. Cookie presses can range from $9.99 – 49.99, depending on make and model. Suggestions when using a cookie press are to chill the dough prior to loading the press; do not over-fill the tube with dough; change templates when the tube is empty; and separate the dough into small batches, adding food dye to each, in order to provide color and variety to your cookies as well as to impress others and yourself in the presentation!
