What To Bring, When it’s Bring Your Own
By Dick Wilson of Rumson & Middletown BuyRite
If you are planning an evening out at one of the many outstanding restaurants in our area, you certainly have a wealth of choices. Many of the fine restaurants are “Bring Your Own”, allowing knowledgeable diners the opportunity to bring their favorite wines to their favorite restaurants. To best enjoy your dining experience here are a few wine suggestions:
One of my favorite French restaurants is Le Fandy in Fair Haven. The restaurant is attractive and comfortable, with an excellent wait staff and mouth watering food. For this restaurant, I recommend you start off with a good Chablis, such as the 2004 Christian Moreau Chablis. This pairs very well with shell fish and is particularly good with oysters. If you prefer a California Chardonnay, the 2004 ZD Chardonnay is elegant without being too heavy and has just a hint of front-palette lemon. The Moreau Chablis sells for $18.99 and The ZD Chardonnay for $29.99. For your main course, you may want to switch to a red. The 2003 Four Graces Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley in Oregon is stunning at just $27.00. If you prefer a Bordeaux, the 2000 Chevalier Des Lascombes Margaux is drinking beautifully right now. This is the second label of Chateau Lascombes, and at $28.99 is really a great buy. For Asian cuisine, try a really good grade sake that is Daiginjo quality. These are a little more expensive, but well worth it. Kikusakari makes a good Daiginjo grade that sells for about $50.00. For something really different, try Yuzu wine, which is made from the Yuzu Japanese citrus fruit. It has a distinct but very different citrus taste which complements Japanese and Thai food perfectly. This sells for $18.99. There are so many really good Italian restaurants that it is sometimes hard to make a choice. La Pasteria in Red Bank is a fun place with good food for a good value, Angelica’s in Sea Bright is also excellent, and I’m sure many readers have their own favorites. Some excellent wines to bring to enhance your Italian dining: The 2003 Barbera D' Asti from La Spinetta. This is a standout red, with forward fruit, good mouth feel and a great finish, all in all, a lot of wine for just $20.00. The 2002 Barbaresco from Produttori is an extremely versatile red, and works well with seafood, too. This has good body without being too heavy and is a standout at just $24.00. If you really want to treat yourself, then perhaps the 2003 Sette Ponti Oreno will make your dinner memorable. This is a young wine and should be decanted to aerate it for maximum enjoyment. I think it pairs best with a robust meal. The Oreno was the Wine Spectator's #5 Wine of the Year, earning a 95 rating. For good Spanish or Portuguese cuisine, such as Bistro Ole in Asbury Park, the 2003 Altos de Luzon from Jumilla, Spain is a really good choice at $13.99. For those who want to step up a bit, try the 2001 Sierra Cantabria Cuvee Especial Rioja. The latter wine received a 93 rating from the Wine Advocate and sells for $25.00 a bottle. It is lush and forward, delicious with hearty cuisines. Do yourself a favor and buy at least two bottles of the Sierra Cantabria, because one is just not enough. Here’s to fun and enjoying your dining experiences, and remember – food makes wine taste better, and wine makes food taste better.
